Your First Scrapbook Page: A Simple Place to Start
Start your first scrapbook page with one photograph, a short note and a loose arrangement. Find a simple method you can adapt before attaching anything.
Your first scrapbook page can start with a single photograph and a sentence about why you chose it. It does not have to introduce every person or summarize the whole album. Give this page one job and build from there.
Choose a photograph you want to spend time with, then lay it on the page without attaching it. You can move the pieces, change your mind or start on a later page while the opening takes shape.
Choose an image with something to say
A technically perfect photograph is optional. Look for an image connected to a particular moment: arriving somewhere, an ordinary evening or the beginning of a shared project.
Ask what you remember beyond the picture. If a sentence comes easily, you have something to work with. Our photo-selection guide has more ways to narrow the choice.
Write the note before decorating
On a loose piece of paper, finish “I kept this because…” or “This was the day…” You can remove the opening words later. Include a place or approximate date if that helps the story.
Read it once aloud. Keep the words you would say to the person receiving the album. You can type and print the note if you prefer; handwritten text is an option, not a test you have to pass.
Try three loose arrangements
First put the note below the photograph. Next try it beside the photograph. Finally, place the note on the facing page and let the image have more space. Compare how each arrangement reads.
You do not need to fill the remaining space. If you want decoration, choose a small piece of paper or a sticker that belongs with the memory. Check that it does not cover important details or the binding area.
Test the page as part of an album
Turn the page, look at the facing side and close the album gently. Check the usable page area rather than relying on the cover size. Any item that catches or adds uncomfortable bulk needs a different position or a smaller substitute.
Take a phone photograph of the arrangement you like. Then attach the pieces using the instructions for your actual materials. Allow any adhesive to dry as directed.
Let the next page be different
You can repeat a caption position or a color without repeating the whole layout. A quiet page can sit beside a busier one. The connection is your story, not a requirement that every page match.
